Mystery Dive Trip F.A.Q.
What exactly is a “Mystery Dive Trip”?
A Mystery Dive Trip is a unique diving adventure where the destination is kept a surprise until the departure day. This adds an element of excitement and anticipation to your diving experience.
How are the destinations chosen?
Our diving experts select destinations based on a range of factors including your diving proficiency, preferred diving intensity, previous diving experiences, and desired learning opportunities, among other things.
Make sure you fill out the registration form and put thought into your answers… each decision helps us curate the perfect trip for you.
What's the duration of a typical Mystery Dive Travel Trip?
The duration of our trips can vary, but a standard trip usually lasts for a week (5-7 days). The actual diving days might be less, considering the first and last days are generally reserved for arrival and departure.
Our “Other Worldly” level trips will typically be 7-10 days due to distances required to travel.
How much does a Mystery Dive Travel Trip cost?
Our Mystery Dive Trips can vary depending on the time of year, destination, length of stay, accommodation type, and additional services requested.
Currently our pricing is:
Budget: $1700/pp
Mid-range: $2500/pp
Luxury: $3500/pp
Other Worldly: $4500/pp
Can I have a luxury accommodation at a budget price?
No.
We wish that was possible, but we have to keep expectations realistic.
If you choose a budget level price, please expect the accommodations to reflect this.
If you choose opposing selections on the registration form, we will reach out to you to clarify your budget and set proper expectations.
What are some examples of the different types of accommodations for each level of mystery?
Depending on the selected mystery level of your trip, accommodations can range from budget-friendly guest houses to luxury resorts and liveaboards.
For instance, a budget level mystery may involve staying in comfortable B&B, guesthouses or 2-3 star hotels.
A mid-range mystery might include 3-star hotels with a range of services.
If you opt for a luxury level mystery, you might find yourself in a 4 or 5-star resort, boasting private beaches, world-class dining, and top-notch spa services.
Other worldly mysteries will vary with accommodations, but take you further from home or have you staying in a truly unique accommodation.
No matter the level, we ensure all accommodations are clean, safe, and located conveniently close to the dive sites.
Liveaboards may be available on all levels of mystery- but be aware that the budget will play a large factor in the type of accommodations onboard, length of the trip, destination and type of ship.
What if I don’t like the destination when I’m at the airport?
Our team is focused on providing you with an unparalleled diving experience. We’ve taken all your preferences into account and with over 20 years experience in the travel industry and millions of combined miles traveled, we think you’ll have a great time.
However, we understand that the element of surprise may not always yield the expected results. If you find yourself dissatisfied with the revealed destination at the airport, we encourage you to communicate your concerns to our team. While we cannot promise a change in destination due to logistical constraints, our team will strive to address your concerns and ensure that your diving experience is enjoyable and memorable, regardless of the location.
What kind of accommodations can I expect?
Accommodations vary based on your chosen preference (budget, mid-range, luxury, other worldly), time of year for travel and vendor availability.
Are there any dietary considerations?
Yes, we cater to a range of dietary requirements.
Please specify your dietary needs in the registration form so we can make arrangements accordingly.
Is Nitrox available?
More than likely, yes.
If you would like to have Nitrox available on your dives, let us know and we’ll make all arrangements necessary.
There may be additional fees for Nitrox.
Do I need to have prior diving experience?
We offer diving trips for various levels of proficiency, from novice to veteran divers.
It is essential to have at least an Open Water Certification to participate in dives.
That said, non-divers are welcome to join you, they just cannot dive. There is no price difference for non-divers as the excess funds will be cycled into enhancing the experience as much possible.
Are non-diver friends or family members allowed?
Absolutely! Non-divers are welcome on our trips. While they cannot participate in diving, there are plenty of activities for them to engage in, including snorkeling, sunbathing, and exploring the local area.
Will there be any opportunities for night diving?
Night diving availability depends on the location and your preference. If you are interested, please indicate this in the registration form.
What additional services are provided on the trip?
We offer a range of services such as photography, videography, equipment rental, and dive training. You can select these services while filling out the registration form
Can I celebrate a special occasion during the trip?
Absolutely! If you are celebrating a special occasion like a birthday or anniversary, please let us know. We would love to help make your celebration extra special!
What safety measures do you implement?
Your safety is our top priority. These trips are individual trips and will not be accompanied by an AAO representative.
All dives are conducted under the supervision of local certified dive masters and instructors. We also ensure that all our vendors’ equipment is regularly serviced and meets safety standards. In case of emergencies, we have verified that first aid and emergency action plans are in place.
WHAT IF I NEED A ROOMMATE?
If you would like to have a roommate but don't not have one identified yet, then we will initially only charge the double occupancy rate. Aquatic Adventures Ohio will work to find you a roommate; however, if a roommate cannot be found then you are responsible for paying the single occupancy rate (which could be 2x the double occupancy rate).
Can I go diving just a few times? Or do I have to dive every day?
The first rule of diving (well, one of the first rules) is to call a dive if you aren’t comfortable. This means that if you have signed up to go diving one day and you don’t feel comfortable, please don’t get in the water.
That said, this is a personal choice and not one that will result in a refund of money.
What gear do I need to bring?
Depending on your destination, you should bring all essential diving gear.
A detailed checklist will be provided prior to your departure.
is the use of reef-safe sunscreen required?
It is not required, but it is strongly recommended to use of reef-friendly sunscreens to help keep the ocean’s corals healthy. Research estimates that 4-6,000 metric tons of sunscreen wash off swimmers into the ocean annually, and most of these sunscreens contain ingredients that cause harmful algae blooms and coral bleaching. Please check your sunscreens and avoid those that contain benzophenon/oxybenzone. To do your part, use biodegradable, natural sunscreens to help protect the reefs.
Look for sunscreens that have active ingredients such as titanium dioxide or zinc oxide.
Is travel insurance included in the package?
No, travel insurance is not included in the package. We strongly advise all our guests to procure comprehensive travel insurance that covers diving and medical evacuation.
AAO requires each diver to have DAN dive insurance or something similar that includes coverage for Hyperbolic Chamber treatments.
We also have travel insurance options available (see details and comparisons at the bottom of this webpage).
Can I pay by check?
Yes!
If you would like to avoid the 3% processing fee, you may pay by check. You can drop this off at the front desk of the dive shop or by mailing this directly to the dive shop.
Dive Insurance
Aquatic Adventures of Ohio requires all divers to have some level of dive insurance to travel on all trips. At minimum, you must have hyperbaric recompression chamber coverage- this may be covered by your current insurance, but if not… you’ll need supplemental dive accident insurance.
NOTE: A DAN membership is separate from DAN insurance.
If you don’t have dive insurance yet, check out the link below for plan options.
Proof of dive insurance will be required prior to departure. If no dive insurance has been purchased/proof provided, AAO reserves the right to cancel your reservation without refund.
