Escape the hustle and bustle of Panama City with a serene half-day trip to Taboga Island, also known as the "Island of Flowers."

For Panamanians, Taboga is synonymous with art, music, and literature. Easily visible from Panama City, this enchanting island, located in the Gulf of Panama within the Pacific Ocean, boasts a coastal perimeter of about 8 miles. While it is now much simpler to reach, many are unaware that Taboga has historically been the backdrop for numerous significant events. Its narrow streets and ancient buildings hold traditions that have transcended Panamanian borders, influencing citizens from other countries as well.

The infamous pirate Captain Morgan and his crew of buccaneers often used Taboga Island as a rest stop during their voyages, although their visits were mostly characterized by consuming all the wine available on the island. The tranquil island of Taboga also played a significant role during the Second World War, serving as a US Army military base atop Cerro de la Cruz, which brought economic prosperity due to the large number of soldiers stationed there. Originally named after its discovery, the island was later renamed Taboga, meaning “abundant fish” in the indigenous language. Today, the island is famously known as the “Island of Flowers,” celebrated for its vibrant blooms and rich wildlife.

Upon arrival, you'll have the opportunity to explore the charming village of San Pedro. Wander through narrow streets lined with vibrant bougainvillea, and visit the island’s historic church—one of the oldest in the Americas. For those inclined towards nature, a hike up Cerro de la Cruz provides panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean and surrounding islands, while the trail itself offers glimpses of the island's diverse flora and fauna.

After exploring, unwind on Playa Restinga, a beautiful sandy beach perfect for sunbathing or swimming in the crystal-clear waters. If you're a snorkelling enthusiast, the waters around Taboga Island are teeming with marine life, making it an excellent spot for underwater exploration.

Before heading back to Panama City, indulge in a leisurely lunch at one of the seaside restaurants, where you can savor fresh seafood while enjoying the ocean breeze. With its blend of natural beauty, historical charm, and tranquility, a half-day trip to Taboga Island is a rejuvenating experience that perfectly complements your Panamanian adventure.

F.A.Q.

Be aware of common scams

Scammers operate in all big cities and some target tourists. Be wary of strangers who tell unfortunate and earnest stories that end with them asking for money. If it seems suspicious, it probably is. Watch out for fake tour guides who ask for payment in advance and then stand you up.

Old-school taxi scams that involve going around the houses to increase the fare can happen anywhere in the world, but in Panama City, it’s common for taxis to simply overcharge. There are no meters in the cabs.

Fares are supposed to be based on zones, but in practice, they rarely are. If you look foreign, taxi drivers will bump up the fare. It's best to negotiate and agree on the price beforehand.

What credentials does our guide have?

Rest assured, your adventures in Panama will be not only thrilling but also secure, thanks to the unparalleled qualifications of your local guide.

In addition to the credentials best suited for a guide (Bachelor Degree on Tourism, Hoteliers and Tourism and Business Administration,
Panama Tourism authority certified tour guide, Certified Coordinator tour guide)

Your guide is also certified in the following areas:

  • Your guide holds a CCW (Carry Concealed Weapon) Permit, indicating a comprehensive background check and firearm safety training.

  • Additionally, they have completed advanced Bodyguard Training, equipping them with the skills to protect and manage any unforeseen situations that might arise during our excursions.

  • To ensure your safety, our guide is certified in First Aid by the International Red Cross, adept at providing immediate care in emergency scenarios.

  • Furthermore, their expert training in Survival and Rescue techniques means you’re in capable hands, whether navigating the dense rainforests or exploring the rugged terrains of Panama.

Our commitment to your safety and well-being is paramount, and our guide’s credentials are a testament to this promise.

Transport crime in Panama

Bus stations tend to be high crime areas, but you should also be aware that Tocumen International Airport in Panama city is the only airport in Panama that maintains international airport security measures. Local domestic air carriers have low safety and security standards, and are best avoided.

For your own safety, only use registered taxis, and where possible call a taxi rather than hail one off the street. Do not share taxis with strangers, and always sit in the back seat.

Drug trafficking

Be aware of the increase in gang violence in Panama. Drug trafficking throughout Panama is fuelling an increase in youth gangs, which are more often than not directly related to drugs in some manner.

Carry identification

Many Latin Americans are trying to emigrate to Panama, so you'll notice policeman sometimes stop travelers and ask them for their ID. You don't have to carry your passport, but to avoid problems you should carry a photocopy of the photo page of your passport, and the page where your entry date is stamped.

Panama law also requires that you carry identification documentation at all times.

LGBTQ+ safety

Although homosexual acts are not illegal, discretion is highly recommended, since homosexuality is not socially acceptable in all areas.

Solo women travelers may receive unwanted attention

Panama City is typically safe for solo women travelers, but it's best to avoid walking alone at night in Casco Viejo, Santa Ana or Calidonia. Women may receive attention from chatty men on Metro trains or buses. If a man won’t leave you alone, ask a nearby older woman to assist.

Steer clear of sketchy neighborhoods (without your guide)

Thirty years ago, Casco Viejo was dicey. Today, things have somewhat improved, but there are still pockets of the old neighborhood where you should exercise caution.

If you’re staying in Casco Viejo, the 20-minute walk from the nearest Metro train station, 5 de Mayo, is risky at night. Use a taxi or an Uber instead. To the west of Casco Viejo, the neighboring El Chorrillo district is very dangerous and neglected. You should avoid this neighborhood entirely without your guide.

The district of Santa Ana, north of Casco Viejo, is bisected by the pedestrianized peatonal, a lively shopping street that is safe to walk during the day; stay alert in the crowds. The side roads east of the peatonal are sketchy, and you shouldn’t wander around them.

At its north end, the peatonal connects with Plaza 5 de Mayo, the National Assembly, a Metro station, a bus terminal and a grimy confluence of roads and flyovers. The area is lively into the evening, but stay alert and use a vehicle after 11pm.

North of 5 de Mayo, Avenida Central strikes into Calidonia district with street vendors and hustle. It's fine to explore in the day, but don’t flaunt expensive equipment or jewelry. Calidonia is spooky and seedy after dark. Avoid run-down or poorly lit streets.

Photography isn't always appreciated

It's illegal to photograph official buildings in Panama. You should check with local authorities before taking photos. Taking photographs, particularly of children and women, may be met with suspicion and violence. Permission from an adult should be obtained before taking photographs of, or talking to, children.

WHAT TIME IS THE CHECK IN TO THE ACCOMMODATIONS?

Check in at your accommodations will not be until 3pm.

  • If you arrive prior to your hotel being ready, the front desk will be able to hold your bags securely while you go out and enjoy the city.

Are meals INCLUDED?

Breakfast is included daily, all other meals are at your own expense.

Always keep a stash of low-denomination bills

You'll need to show your ID and sign a register if you pay for anything with a higher bill than US$20. Counterfeit money is an issue in the country, so all $50 and $100 bills will be scrutinized in Panama.

Don’t smoke in public

Legislation introduced in 2008 banned smoking in public places. People who smoke in non-designated areas are subject to fines of $25–100.

Dress for comfort but look sharp

Panamanians like to dress up and look their best. The ostentatious displays of fashion on display in Obarrio include stiletto heels that somehow survive the assault course of the city’s pavements.

When socializing, casual attire is fine, but avoid wearing shorts and sandals to nice restaurants or social functions.

Suggested Gratuities:

If you stay in a hotel, leave a tip for the person who cleans your room – US$2–3 a day is fine. A 10% tip is often added in good restaurants, but not always – check the bill before paying.

In low-key local eateries, you may leave some loose change for the server. Unless they help with luggage, taxi drivers don’t expect a tip.

Can I drink the tap water?

In Panama, tap water is generally safe for consumption, especially in Panama City and other urban areas where the water supply is treated and monitored to meet health standards. However, in some rural regions or less populated areas, the tap water quality may vary, and it is advisable to exercise caution. Many locals and travelers prefer drinking bottled water to ensure safety, particularly when visiting remote areas. If you're unsure about the tap water safety at your specific location, it's always best to ask locals or your accommodation provider for guidance. Additionally, using a water filter or purification tablets can offer extra assurance for drinking water safety during your stay.

Can I pay by Zelle?

Yes!

We started taking Zelle payments last month and we found this to be a fast and FREE way to pay!
For those who don’t know what Zelle is… it is very much like a wire transfer (but it is not a wire transfer).

Everyone’s bank is different, though, so you may want to call/go in to your local bank and ask to have the maximum amount available to transfer every day.

Example: Some banks only allow $500/day transfer. Other banks will allow $1200/day.

Always be careful when making payments through Zelle to people that you do not know. There is no protection guarantee provided and you cannot reverse the fee.

The Pros for using Zelle:

  • It is FREE (no processing fees)!

  • It is instantaneous (funds will go directly to Zone Travel- so this is the absolute fastest way to make a payment)

The Cons for using Zelle:

  • Every bank is different when it comes to maximum amount available to be transferred every day. So, this may mean that you need to make multiple payments to Zone Travel, multiple days in a row.

  • It does require an app download onto your phone, and you need to set up your account with your bank information.
