Free Day

Enjoy a free day to explore Tromsø today!

There’s lots to do, but if you want a suggestion for the day… embark on a journey to the Tromsø University Museum, where you'll delve into the intriguing history and culture of Northern Norway.

For dinner, consider having a reindeer hotdog at Raketten Bar & Pølse (Storgata 94B, Tromsø, Norway, 9008)!
Or, if you prefer a sit-down meal, try Fiskekompaniet (Killengreens gate, 9008 Tromsø, Norway).

A trip up the Fjellheisen Cable Car is the perfect end to your day, offering panoramic views of Tromsø against a backdrop of dramatic, snow-capped mountains and clear, starlit skies.
(We don’t suggest dinner at the top of the cable car, as the menu is quite limited and does not offer gluten free/dairy free meals.
Drinks up here (at the Fjellheisen Restaurant); however, would be a lovely (and romantic) way to end your first full day in Norway.

(Tickets are required and the cable car runs until midnight every night. Your best chance of seeing the northern lights up here are after 6pm)
Let us know if you’d like us to purchase cable car tickets on your behalf.)

F.A.Q.

WHAT TIME IS THE CHECK IN TO THE HOTEL?

Check in at your hotel will not be until 3pm at the earliest.

  • If you arrive early, or your room is not yet ready for you to check in when you arrive, you may be able to leave your bags with the front desk and they will keep them securely held behind the desk while you go out and eat or explore the city until your room is ready.

DO I HAVE TO WEAR MY MASK THE WHOLE TIME?

At this time, No.

IS BREAKFAST INCLUDED?

At your hotels, yes. .

The serving times vary by hotel (they will tell you at check-in), but usually breakfast is served starting at 6:30am.

where will I go through customs?

You will go through customs in the first Schengen country that you enter. (This could be Paris or Tromsø depending on the flight schedule chosen.)

When you return to the USA you'll go through customs in IAD (or wherever your first point of entry is into the USA).

Is it better to use cash or card in Norway?

Debit and credit cards are accepted almost everywhere, and many places also accept payment by phone, like Google Pay and Apple Pay. But it is still a good idea to have a bit of cash on you for small purchases. Foreign currency is rarely accepted, so you need Norwegian currency to get by.

Should I exchange money before I travel to Norway?

Having some Norwegian krone cash on hand can be helpful.

Credit unions and banks will exchange your dollars into a foreign currency before and after your trip when you have a checking or savings account with them. (Just remember that when you return home, the banks will not accept any coins… only paper bills.)

You will need to order Norwegian Kroner from your bank at least 2-3 weeks prior to your departure.

If you need cash while you’re traveling, we recommend drawing some from an ATM once you've arrived in the foreign country.
Keep in mind, unless you’re using a prepaid multi-currency card like Revolut or a credit card with no foreign transaction fees, you could incur currency exchange fees.

What is the tipping etiquette in Scandinavia?

In Scandinavia, tipping etiquette is modest compared to many other regions.

Norway:
In Norway, service charge is typically included in the bill, thus tipping is not expected but appreciated for exceptional service – usually rounding up the bill suffices.

Overall, while tipping isn't obligatory, it's appreciated as a token of satisfaction with the service provided.

What’s included in my Polaria Aquarium ticket?

Polaria - An Arctic Experience Centre

In a distinctive building depicting ice floes pushed up on land by the rugged ocean in the Arctic, you find Polaria. Polaria is a journey of discovery for the whole family.

General Information

Polaria is an Arctic aquarium and experience center located in the heart of Tromsø. If you are curious about how animals, fish, plants, and people are living together side by side, Polaria is the perfect place to experience and understand life in the Arctic. Here you will meet bearded seals and harbour seals, catfish, and tiny sharks, and you will get to know the different species that move across the ocean floor.

Seal Pool and Aquarium

We have five playful seals living in our seal pool. In our aquarium you will find animals, fish and shellfish that live in our polar regions, along with specimens of Arctic underwater flora. We invite you to join in on our daily feeding and training sessions of the seals.

Panoramic Theatre

In our Panoramic Theatre you can see three different films that showcase some of the spectacular phenomena we have here in the wild north. Experience the Northern Lights in the Tromsø region, fly over Svalbard’s glaciers and mountains, and join us behind the scenes here at Polaria. We show several screenings of the films every day.

Exhibitions and our mission

Polaria’s mission is to showcase the research done in the Arctic and sub-Arctic regions. Through knowledge-based exhibitions made in collaboration with scientists from the Fram - High North Research Centre for Climate

and the Environment, Polaria will mirror some of the research that takes place in the Arctic. Our brand-new interactive exhibitions allow you to learn more about and reflect over the man-made challenges our region is facing. The intention behind the exhibition is to make our guests understand how all life is connected and dependent on each other.

Can I pay by Zelle?

Yes!

We started taking Zelle payments last month and we found this to be a fast and FREE way to pay!
For those who don’t know what Zelle is… it is very much like a wire transfer (but it is not a wire transfer).

Everyone’s bank is different, though, so you may want to call/go in to your local bank and ask to have the maximum amount available to transfer every day.

Example: Some banks only allow $500/day transfer. Other banks will allow $1200/day.

Always be careful when making payments through Zelle to people that you do not know. There is no protection guarantee provided and you cannot reverse the fee.

The Pros for using Zelle:

  • It is FREE (no processing fees)!

  • It is instantaneous (funds will go directly to Zone Travel- so this is the absolute fastest way to make a payment)

The Cons for using Zelle:

  • Every bank is different when it comes to maximum amount available to be transferred every day. So, this may mean that you need to make multiple payments to Zone Travel, multiple days in a row.

  • It does require an app download onto your phone, and you need to set up your account with your bank information.

Can I pay by check?

Yes!

If you would like to avoid the 4% credit card processing fees, you may pay by check.
It is very important that you pay in advance of the deadlines and allow ample time for delivery.

Payments received after the deadline could result in cancelation of your reservation or increased fees.

There are two ways to pay by check:

  • Mail the check

  • Deposit directly at a local branch
