Things to do in Bonaire

Pekelmeer Flamingo Sanctuary

Pretty in pink, these birds of a feather flock together throughout the island. You’re most likely to spot these blushing beauties near the salt flats or at Goto Lake, but you can also get a closer look in the Pekelmeer Flamingo Sanctuary, one of the few breeding places for the American flamingo in the Southern Caribbean.

The sanctuary, which is off-limits to visitors to protect the flamingos, still offers exceptional opportunities to observe these birds from designated viewing areas.

The Pekelmeer Flamingo Sanctuary is one of only four areas in the world where Flamingos breed. Pekelmeer means “salt lake” in Dutch. Pools appear pink against the white salt flats because an abundance of tiny rosy brine shrimp live in the water. The Sanctuary is located on the vast salt pans at the southern end of the island and home to over ten thousand flamingos.

Visitors are left in awe as they watch large flocks majestically wade through the salt flats, creating a picturesque scene that epitomizes the tranquil beauty of Bonaire's wildlife.

The refuge also attracts dozens of other species, including osprey, cormorants, heron, frigate birds, and other marine birds.

Cadushy Distillery

If you’re wanting to try something you can ONLY do in Bonaire, consider a visit to the Cadushy Distillery.

Here you can sample the worlds only cactus liquor, something you can only find on Bonaire.

The Cadushy Distillery adds another layer to Bonaire's diverse attractions, offering a unique experience that tantalizes the taste buds while showcasing the island's innovative spirit.

Nestled in the tranquil village of Rincon, the distillery is famous for producing the world's only cactus liquor, drawing inspiration from Bonaire’s native Kadushi cactus.

A visit here is not just about tasting this one-of-a-kind spirit but also discovering the meticulous process of transforming cacti into liqueur.

As the engaging staff unravels the fascinating journey from plant to bottle, visitors can indulge in samples of various locally made spirits, understanding the flavor nuances influenced by the island's distinctive climate and culture.

The Cadushy Distillery exemplifies Bonaire’s dedication to sustainable practices and resourcefulness, making it a must-visit destination for both connoisseurs and curious travelers alike.

Bonaire’s Botanical Garden

Visit the Botanical Garden and take the tour. Learn more about plantation in a desert terrain like Bonaire, Mr. Manuel will Provide all the information needed. It also offers Permaculture, Medicinal Herbs and Organic Herbs. The Botanical Garden is located on the road to Rincon in the area of Trai Montaña.

Mangroves

The mangroves in Bonaire are a vital ecological treasure, acting as a key player in the island's environmental conservation efforts. These salt-tolerant trees create a unique mangrove forest that serves as a nursery and habitat for a variety of marine species, including juvenile fish, which find shelter among their intricate roots.

Visitors can explore this serene and crucial ecosystem through responsibly guided kayak and snorkeling tours, which emphasize the importance of preservation while allowing an up-close experience of its natural splendor.

Downtown Kralendijk

This town is known for its friendly atmosphere, award-winning restaurants, and a plethora of shops. Venture out during the day for family fun or enjoy a night on the town. You'll find Dutch beer at most eateries, as well as hand-crafted Caribbean cocktails, fine wine, authentic Bonairian cuisine, and more.

Kralendijk is the epitome of Caribbean charm blended with historical intrigue, making it an alluring destination for any traveler.

It's a place where one can experience the warmth of local hospitality and engage with Bonaire's rich history and vibrant culture.

Sera L

argu

Sera Largu, with its panoramic vistas, stands as a testament to the island's wondrous ability to blend natural beauty with historical significance.

Perched high upon a hill, visitors are treated to a breathtaking overview of Bonaire, with the turquoise Caribbean Sea stretching out to the horizon, softly kissed by the golden hues of the setting sun.

This vantage point is not only a perfect spot for photographers seeking to capture the picturesque landscape but also for those wishing to reflect on the quiet grandeur of nature. .

Onima Indian Inscriptions

Small signposts direct the way to the Indian inscriptions found on a 3-foot limestone ledge that juts out like a partially formed cave entrance. Look up to see the red-stained designs and symbols inscribed on the limestone, said to have been the handiwork of the Arawak Indians when they inhabited the island centuries ago. The pictographs date back at least to the 15th century.

Salt Pans

The salt flats in Bonaire, visual spectacles in their own right, contribute significantly to the island's unique landscape. These expansive salt pans, appearing as vast, mirror-like surfaces, play a crucial role in Bonaire's economy as a major source of salt production. The process, relying on the natural evaporation of seawater, leaves behind crystalline pyramids of pure salt — a stark and beautiful contrast against the deep blues of the Caribbean Sea.

For visitors, the salt flats are not only a place for stunning photography but also offer a rare glimpse into the island's industrial heritage.

Surrounded by pink-hued water basins, due to the presence of halophilic microorganisms, and overlooked by towering mountains of harvested salt, the flats feature an almost otherworldly environment, where the horizons blend the azure of the sky with the earthen tones of the land.

Visitors to Bonaire can visit the salt flats, although access to certain areas may be restricted due to operational and safety reasons within the salt harvesting zones.

For those eager to capture the essence of this stark, yet stunning environment, there are specific vantage points and tours available.
It's advisable to join organized excursions or reach out to local guides who can provide safe access and in-depth knowledge about the history and the workings of the salt flats — an unforgettable experience marrying Bonaire's natural beauty with its industrial vigour.

Explore Rincón

Rincón, Bonaire's oldest settlement, is a charming town brimming with cultural and historical significance. Visitors can start their exploration at the Mangazina di Rei Museum, which offers insights into Bonaire's rich heritage and the lives of its first inhabitants through informative exhibits and guided tours. Walking through the scenic streets, you’ll encounter well-preserved colonial architecture that tells stories of the town's past.

Every April, Rincón comes alive during the Dia di Rincón festival (April 30th), a vibrant celebration featuring traditional music, dance, and local cuisine.

Slave Huts and Obelisks

These huts were constructed in 1850 during the slavery time, and served as camping facilities for slaves working in the salt ponds to collect and ship the salt, one of Bonaire’s most important export product.

These huts were used as sleeping quarters and place to put away personal belongings of the working team. Each Friday afternoon the slaves walked seven hours to Rincon to weekend with their families, returning each Sunday.

Four Obelisks on Bonaire were used as navigational shore markers to guide ships coming in to load. The obelisks were painted red, white, blue and orange (the colors of the Dutch flag).

This tax is applicable to all visitors and is utilized to support the island's infrastructure, tourism initiatives, and conservation efforts. The entry tax is typically collected at the airport, but can be paid online as well, and contributes significantly to maintaining the natural beauty and cultural heritage that Bonaire has to offer. It's important for visitors to be prepared for this additional expense as part of their travel arrangements. Checking the latest regulations before your journey is advisable to ensure compliance and a seamless entry into this remarkable destination.

THE MANDATORY TAX MAY BE PAID ONLINE VIA THE WEBSITE HTTP://TOURISMTAX.BONAIREGOV.COM/ IT MAY ALSO BE PAID UPON ARRIVAL AT THE AIRPORT OR UPON ARRIVAL BY BOAT IN THE OFFICE OF THE HAROUR VILLAGE MARINA.

Is there also a Marine Park Entry Fee?

Yes.

The $40/pp fee covers the Marine Park Entry Fee (aka the STINAPA fee)

The STINAPA fee is a crucial component of Bonaire's sustainable tourism strategy, aimed at conserving the island's unique natural resources and biodiversity. STINAPA, the National Parks Foundation of Bonaire, manages the island's nature reserves, including the Bonaire National Marine Park and the Washington-Slagbaai National Park.

Can I go diving just a few times? Or do I have to dive every day?

The first rule of diving (well, one of the first rules) is to call a dive if you aren’t comfortable. This means that if you have signed up to go diving one day and you don’t feel comfortable, please don’t get in the water.
That said, this is a personal choice and not one that will result in a refund of money.

is the use of reef-safe sunscreen required?

It is not required, but it is strongly recommended to use of reef-friendly sunscreens to help keep the ocean’s corals healthy. Research estimates that 4-6,000 metric tons of sunscreen wash off swimmers into the ocean annually, and most of these sunscreens contain ingredients that cause harmful algae blooms and coral bleaching. Please check your sunscreens and avoid those that contain benzophenon/oxybenzone. To do your part, use biodegradablenatural sunscreens to help protect the reefs.

Look for sunscreens that have active ingredients such as titanium dioxide or zinc oxide.
